Why do I read personal finance blogs?
What it is about reading about the personal finances of someone you’ve never met? I regularly follow about ten finance blogs (links on the side) and occasionally check on many others. The ones I enjoy the most, I’ve signed up for their RSS so I won’t miss any posts.
I think what I like the most is seeing how real people are putting the basics of personal finance to use in their own lives. As someone who’s read a lot of finance books and articles, sometimes it’s hard to see how to put it all together and apply it to your own situation. Reading other people’s financial blogs with similar situations to yours can give you ideas and incentive to put it into practice.
For example, a blog I came across recently has really inspired me. Madison at My Dollar Plan is about the same age and in a similar family situation. She recently “retired” from her regular job at 29 to follow her other interests and spend time with her two young children. She’s living the financial principles that I’m trying to apply in my life. Although I have a much longer way to go! This helps motivate me to work harder at my own financial goals.
A lot of the time I don’t agree with the blogger. Sometimes I enjoy reading these posts the most! It helps crystallize my own thoughts on the subject or causes me to rethink a position.
